Literatura incendiaria: engaged literature in 20th and 21st-century Spain

SPAN 465
chapas

The indignados movement marked a before and an after in the contemporary history of Spain. In the field of literature, this moment coincides with a return of engaged literature, as the current reality requires a writer who assumes the responsibility to denounce and make visible the problematics of citizenship. This course will review the canon of Spanish engaged literature and cultural production in the 20th and 21st centuries, paying attention to those authors and works that have been recognized by their commitment with a left-wing ideology. The main objective will be to contextualize these literary interventions by analyzing why and for whom the author writes, as well as their discursive strategies.
