Sex and Power in the Latin American Aesthetic Imaginary

SPAN 326
ytumama

In this course, we will study the aesthetic representations of sex and sexuality in Latin American literary and artistic work from the mid-twentieth century to the present. With special attention to the influence—and resistance—of feminist, queer, and critical race theories, we will address the ways narratives about sex and sexuality inform and are informed by social, cultural, and political shifts. Through narrative, performance art, music, and film, this course will approach the study of gender and sexuality through a close-reading of the ways in which systems of power influence, interrupt, and interrogate the construction of sexual cultures in contemporary Latin America.
