Graduate student Eunyoung Yang has been selected as the 2025 winner of the Pilar Sáenz Graduate Student Essay Award for her paper “Transpacific Voyages: Chino Maritime Workers and Colonial Mobility in Eighteenth-Century New Spain”. This national level award, awarded by the Ibero-American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies comes with $500 and consideration for publication in Dieciocho: Hispanic Enlightenment.

The award judges commented that “The essay makes a yet preliminary but significant contribution to the study of transpacific migration, colonial labor, and racial classification in the Spanish Empire. ……. Given the clarity of the writing, the persuasive line of argumentation, and the capable interpretation of archival sources, the essay deserves the award.”

Congratulations Eunyoung!
