Biography
Angelica Waner (she/ella) was born and raised in Los Angeles (Tovangaar), California. She joined the University of Illinois community in 2024 as a Chancellor's Postdoctoral Research Associate in American Indian Studies. Before that, she completed her PhD in Hispanic Languages and Literatures with graduate certificates in Writing Programs, American Indian Studies, and Experimental Critical Theory at UCLA. Through interdisciplinary methods of close-reading, archival research, and Indigenous Theory, her current book project analyzes Isthmus Zapotec cosmologies, identities, histories, and politics across 20th century Mexico. More broadly, she is interested in the way that literary production supports Indigenous peoples' autonomy and futurities. Angelica is a first-generation college student and now professor and is always happy to speak to students about navigating undergraduate and graduate programs.
